Thought control? Hope springs

The Trump administration released the dire warning of its own climate scientists from 13 agencies during Thanksgiving, hoping it would be buried at a time when most people in the US are spending time with their families and eating Turkey.

Trump told reporters that he did not believe the study from the 300 climate experts after reading “some” of their conclusions. But  instead of hiding the bad news, Trump succeeded in really focusing attention on the matter.

At about the same time the Brazilian government published data telling us that deforestation in the Amazon rain forest had jumped to its worst rate in a decade. The New York Times also published an in-depth report on how fast the rain forests in Asia are disappearing to fulfill an insatiable demand for palm oil.

A huge consensus of the world’s best climate scientists have been telling us for years that we have a serious problem and that the earth will become uninhabitable for humans in half a century if humanity does not gets its act together in the next few years in doing something about climate change.

The climate scientists are telling us that limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels is essential. Planting more trees, and keeping existing trees in the ground is essential if we want to meet that goal.

Only a small group of pseudo-scientists – nearly all of them funded by the fossil fuel industry- are in denial and pumping us with “thought control” fake news. It is much the same scenario that the world saw in the early 1960s when the tobacco industry paid “researchers” to deny the overwhelming evidence that smoking caused cancer. I don’t know how these people sleep at night or whether they really believe their own lies.

The danger is that when we hear all this bad news, it makes us fall into a paralytic state of in-action. What the anti-environmentalist governments in Brazil and the U.S. do is out of our control. The Amazon or Borneo is far away. We aren’t inhaling – yet – the smoke from all the burning forests.

Fact is that in our little worlds we can all do something. Here are only a few suggestions:

  • Each time we pick up a shampoo or cosmetic item in the supermarket we can check whether it contains palm oil.
  • Refuse to buy products equity or stock from agro-companies that are involved in deforestation. Check for the FSC label on sustainable forestry.
  • A vegan diet and food from the local organic farmer leaves the smallest carbon footprint. Mass animal production farms are dependent on monoculture farming that is destroying biodiversity.  For me personally a mainly vegetarian diet with a little organic meat every now and then is the best option.

Amid all the bad news, hope springs that we might after all get this climate issue solved if we really supported some very innovative ideas out there:

  • Dr. David Vaughan is a scientist who has achieved a breakthrough technology in bringing coral reefs back to life by making them grow up to 40 times faster than in the wild. Coral reefs are key to the ocean ecosystem and are major carbon sinks.
  •  Creating green roofs on skyscrapers in the major cities of the world could have a really positive effect in changing the micro-climate in urban areas and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
  • Vertical farming in skyscrapers is a very effective way of providing fresh organic produce in cities, requiring much less land than conventional farming that is the second-largest emitter of carbon dioxide after the energy sector.  The Swedish company Plantagon is working on making a first prototype by constructing a 16-story building called The World Food Building that could serve as an international model for industrial urban farming.

Why are our pets getting cancer?

We are seeing a staggering rise in cancer among dogs and cats. In the past the leading cause of death was an accident or injury, and some of the experts are saying that it is a normal phenomenon because our pets are getting older. Others disagree: What is killing us is also killing our animal companions – the food we eat and lack of exercise.

animal-cat-cute-46024It is amazing how a change of diet can give the coat of a dog or cat a healthy shine within days. My Dalmatian has in recent weeks had a persistent skin rash, which is not uncommon for the breed. I thought I was doing the right thing by feeding her an expensive organic tinned food, until someone advised me to change the diet. A herbal mix with fresh rabbit meat worked almost immediately.

Our animals are getting the same diseases as humans for the same reasons. We are eating the wrong foods and not exercising enough. Labradors, German Shepherds and Dalmatians are large dogs that need a lot of exercise and get fat when they don’t move. Nearly all the processed pet foods have dangerously high percentages of preservatives and sugars in them. Pets, especially cats, sometimes shun the healthy food because they have become so addicted to the sugars in their diet.

Dogs that groom themselves a lot pick up toxins from the immediate environment. I recently heard of a German Shepherd where a postmortem showed exceptionally high levels of toxins in the liver. The dog had a habit of licking its paws frequently and had picked up most of the toxins from floor cleaners!

Symptoms of cancer in pets are much the same as in humans. Lethargy, blood in urine, and abnormal lumps. A coat losing its shine, shows some problem in the digestive system. Next to our digestive system our skin is a major detoxing agent. An imbalance in the digestive system shows up in the skin. In Chinese medicine unhealthy nails, flaky skin and the hair condition are considered common sign of poor digestion and the inability of the body to digest vital nutrients.

What is happening to our pets is happening to us. The compound effect of sugar-laced processed foods, lack of exercise and a toxic environment inevitably takes its toll.

Creating a better version of yourself

I had a really inspiring meeting last week in Hamburg and Vienna with the best-selling author and founder of Nerium International, Jeff Olson. He embodies all the philosophies on health and self-development that inspired me to establish my own consultancy business PowerBodyMind some eight years ago.

Jeff’s book “The Slight Edge” , on turning simple daily disciplines into massive success and happiness, is a philosophy on which he built a very successful health product company, that has now just entered the European markets. It is not about only selling products, he says, but at the same time helping people becoming a better version of themselves.

I’m convinced that in coming years we are going to see a lot more companies like Nerium coming to the fore, led by charismatic and holistic-thinking leaders who want to improve people’s lives and make the world a better place.

Most people want to do good and feel good when they have the feeling that they are doing something right, even if it is just supporting a product they know has high ethical standards.

At the forefront are companies in the health and beauty industry after we have seen generations of companies putting products on the market that were having terrible effects on consumers, the environment and other living beings. (tests on animals).

Most importantly, we need not become victims of circumstance. We do have the power and awareness to choose what products we want to buy and support. How healthy and happy we are and how long we live is determined largely by lifestyle and not by genes. Scientists have pinpointed several so-called “blue zones” located in places like Okinawa, Japan, and Sardinia in Italy where people continue to live active, healthy lives well into their 90s.

One of the key ingredients of a long life the scientists found is a diet rich in fresh vegetable, Omega 3 fatty acids and fruit with a low consumption of meat. At the same time these old people are all highly respected and honored in their communities. Attitude, sense of purpose and mindset seem just as much an important aspect as diet and exercise.

Interestingly many of these old folk have survived their children and grandchildren who became ill and died from typical modern diseases such as heart problems and diabetes II after adopting a sedentary lifestyle rich in processed foods and sugar.

It is indeed all a matter of choice, as Jeff Olson, writes in his book. Turning your life around and making a better version of yourself is simply a matter of choice, adjusting your current lifestyle with simple steps that make that slight edge of a difference from living a life of the mundane to living a life of abundance and happiness.

How important is your health?

Most personal bankruptcies in the United States are directly linked to a health issue. I have seen so many good friends, leaders and experts in their fields hitting a wall with a life-threatening disease in the prime of their lives.

This doesn’t come overnight. In most cases poor or good health is directly linked to lifestyle choices.

Less than ten per cent of major health issues are triggered by fate such as accidents or hereditary factors.

When asked, most people will tell you their health is very important. Asked what they are doing to stay healthy, the question gets a little more difficult to answer.

The truth is that bad lifestyle habits such as poor nutrition and lack of exercise are seeing diseases such as diabetes, cancer, obesity and mental illnesses such as depression skyrocketing in all of the industrialised countries.

I have myself been on the brink of burnout, overburdened by work demands and relationship issues, so I know what I’m talking about. Poor health doesn’t come overnight. Its a slow degenerative process that sets in when you stop looking after yourself and external demands or distractions start controlling your life.

So, its become my passion, my personal mission to tell people what they can do, to lead a much healthier and happier life.

I firmly believe that it all starts from within. Do you love and respect yourself? What is your self image. Your body will reflect what is going on inside you. Facial expressions and body posture can be telling. What mental and physical clutter are you carrying around with you? How do you deal with stress? Are you following your soul purpose? These are questions that need to be answered before you start a diet and it is the main reason why most weight-reduction and exercise programmes fail.

In the many workshops and trainings I have done with people at all levels in the corporate world, the issue its not the lack of awareness. All of us have heard and read about these things. But there is a huge gap between awareness and taking concrete action. I’ve given this a lot of thought. Why do people avoid action when it comes to the most important aspect in their lives with personal health literally affecting every facet of life.

One reason is that you don’t see the effect of bad lifestyle habits immediately. If I told you that drinking that sugar-laced “energy drink” is a poison that will kill you in the next few hours, you wouldn’t touch it. Toxic foods and negative mental distractions are all around us. Its become a huge challenge of our time to avoid these and to focus our mind on positive thoughts.

To have a healthy body metabolism you need a walk of between five and eight kilometres per day. Most people don’t even manage two in walking from the house to the car and from the car to the office. The compound effect – good or bad is what does it.

I have gleaned and finetuned from my workshops what I believe are the key principles of good health. Creating health to prevent disease

We are getting older but many of us are getting older with loss in quality of life as our health starts deteriorating because of poor lifestyle management – the topic of my Blog last week.

We have to go back a little in history to understand why most of us have fallen prey to the fallacy that illness is fate and that we have no control over our health. Western medicine is based on the 19th century concept of Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) that certain types of bacteria invade the body, causing infectious disease. Pasteur’s concept that disease had to be fought like a war with antibiotics, like penicillin, gave birth to today’s multi-trillion dollar antibiotics industry.

Pasteur achieved fame and fortune as the father of penicillin. Few people today remember a person called Antoine Béchamp (1816-1908)  a vigorous opponent of Pasteur. He argued that health on the cellular level is mainly determined by the biological terrain, such as the level of acidity (pH level), the electric charge, level of toxicity and the nutritional state. While Pasteur was being supported by the pharmaceutical industry Bechamp, the other great germ scientist at the time, even had his work placed on an index of prohibited books and died in obscurity.

Simply put: Béchamp was convinced that we have to create health in order to prevent disease while Pasteur was all about creating defensive walls to prevent “alien exterior agents” from entering the body.

With more and more infectious diseases becoming resistant to antibiotics and an explosion of diseases like diabetes II and cancer its worth taking a look again at the biological terrain. Another great scientist Dr. Otto Warburg, who won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1931, took up much of Bechamp’s theories, arguing that basically all disease, especially cancer, feed on an acidic environment.

So what is the real problem here?

Our body should have an alkaline environemnt with a pH value higher than 7.0, anything below that is considered acidic. And, most of us living on a Western diet have an acidic body because of the processed foods we eat with too much sugar and other additives that our body cannot digest.It is compounded by the high-stress levels we have to deal with in today’s fast-paced economic environment. Stress hormones like adrenaline, nodrenaline and cortisol add to an acidic environment. While under stress, our breathing is too shallow, providing our lungs with too little oxygen to supply our cells with the oxygen they need to detox.

The other big detox organ is our skin but it cannot do its job adequately because we use soaps, perfumes, shampoos and shaving creams filled with toxins including microplastics and crude oil.

As our inner terrain becomes more acidic our body’s defensive walls start to break down creating an environment for unwanted guests. In Chinese medicine health is defined as having the right balance with disease being a symptom of many things running out of control. Initial symptoms might be a series of colds and flus, headaches and allergies. Later this might be followed by loss of vitality, chronic fatigue and a more serious illness.

Interestingly,  Pasteur was quoted  on his deathbed as saying  to Professor A. Rénon who looked after him: ‘Bernard avait raison. Le germe n’est rien, c’est le terrain qui est tout.’ (‘Bernard was right. The microbe is nothing, the soil is everything.’).” He was referring to his other contemporary Claude Bernard.

Fatigue and the food you eat

A topic that is largely underrated is that our western diet of mainly processed foods is probably responsible for a large number of the modern diseases like diabetes, cancer, alzheimer and dementia.

burnoutThere is a direct link between the lack of vital nutrients such as Omega 3 fatty acids and the modern office disease chronic fatigue or burnout.

It is thus so important to look at the food  ingredients you buy in the supermarket and here are the top offenders you should really try to avoid if you want to stay healthy:

  • Too much sugar is found in almost all processed foods from tomato sauce to pizza. Our palate has become used to it but it wreaks havoc in our body by robbing us of essential minerals. Alternatives to sugar are stevia and natural organic honey e.g in your tea or coffee.
  • Artificial sweeteners are often food in foods labelled as sugar free or “diet” such as yoghurts but contain aspartame and acesulfame potassium – substances suspected of causing numerous health issues from digestive problems to Alzheimer and Attention Deficit Syndrome (ADS). You will also find artificial sweeteners labelled as fructose, glucose or sucralose.
  • Trans fats or hydrogenated oils like the artificial sweeteners are basically a chemical compund. Mostly several naturally occurring oils such as palm, soya and corn are mixed and heated by several hundred degrees with other substances added to it, changing the molecular structure and making it closer to a plastic than to an oil! We find these trans fats in nearly all processed foods such as dressings, crackers, margarines and cookies.

A junk food diet or a diet consisting mainly of processed foods means that your body is using up a lot of energy and essential nutrients to fight-off these toxic substances, causing typical symptoms like fatigue, tiredness, lack of sleep and irritability. Almost all research done on healthy diets recommend fresh locally produced organic food.

TheIMG_0022  Mediterranean diet is one of the healthiest you can get, typically consisting of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. Bread is eaten mostly by dipping it into healthy locally produced olive oil. Nuts such as almonds, cashews, pistachios and walnut, as well as the herbs and other essential oils provide all the nutrients the body needs. The Mediterranean diet also includes moderate drinking of wine with meals. Wine in moderation is known to reduce heart disease.

A rule of thumb when looking at any list of ingredients: If you don’t understand the “latin” on the label just drop it. Like so many things I recommend on this Blog. Dropping a bad habit and replacing it with a good habit can have an enormous impact on your health and quality of life.

Major health benefits of ginger, turmeric

I’ve just had a bad bout of flu with the virus affecting a lot of people in my immediate vicinity. The immediate impulse was to take the standard medication but I remembered how my grandmother used to heal us with completetly natural substances that are being rediscovered as having huge health benefits.

The real star among them is turmeric which arguably appears to be one of the most powerful medicinal plants on the planet. It contains many healing compounds that have an anti-inflammatory effect and there are claims that it is a most effective anti-depressant.

More recently there have been reports that one of the compounds in turmeric, curcumin, is more effective than chemotherapy in treating cancer patients because of its ability to reduce tumour and the make-up of cancer cells.

In 2009, Biochemistry and Biophysical Research Communications published a study out of Auburn University that explored how supplementing with turmeric can help reverse diabetes.

turmericA combination of turmeric, ginger and lemon in a tea with honey works wonders in boosting the immune system, especially at times when the body if fighting off an infection.

I use turmeric and ginger in my chicken soup which I have for breakfast every day. The ginger is boiled with the chicken for several hours and after taking out the meat I store the broth in the refrigerator to use over the next few days. You only need to heat the soup a little and then you add a teaspoon of this magic turmeric and a pinch of black pepper which helps to bind all those vital nutrients in the body.

Be aware that not all these super plants come from healthy sources with some of them containing pesticides. Make sure that your herbs are organic and that you get your chicken from an organic farm. Its not worth the risk.

Kick-starting from the down cycle

What makes some people happier, more successful and healthier than others? Although research pinpoints some heriditary factors the real clue that makes those rare individuals stand out from the rest of the crowd, is how they deal with the natural up-and-down cycles of life.

The common denominator of highly successful people such as Nelson Mandela, talk show host Oprah Winfrey, businessman Richard Branson or writer  J.K. Rowling is that they all learned ways of kickstarting themselves out of terrible down cycles, that would have destroyed most other people.

The natural reaction to a major setback in life is a type of “shock-freeze paralysis.” The kick-starters however, have adopted habits of how to get out of the down cycle as soon as possible. Lets face it life is not all sunshine and glory. We have bad days and they can sure knock us out of all that we trust and believe in. The loss of a loved one, a life-threatening disease, job-loss, bankruptcy, divorce, and an unforeseen accident. Life is full of unforseen circumstances.

While we can’t control external events we sure have control of how we react to them. So how do you get out of the down-cycle? For me walking the Camino in Spain has been a test of up-and-down cycles every time, a real analogy of life. Going on a pilgrimage, or taking a complete time-out for reorientation, has for me been a major help, like leaving a dysfunctional marriage and a well-paid job that was fast pulling me into a burnout. Simply being in a completely different setting with no electronic distractions and having alone time is really important in stimulating creativity  – and more importantly – learning the lesson from the down cycle. People with a generally high energy level and thus physical and mental resilience, will also find it easier to get out of the down cycle. So if you are in a dark spot, here are some tips:

  • Get moving with physical exercise to get those happy hormones going and start boosting the body’s immune system with nutrients from power foods.
  • Find room for alone time,  prayer, meditation or any other ritual that gives you energy.
  • Meet with friends, family, or any other people that you know will lift you up with positive vibes and to strengthen your feeling that you are part of a community.
  • Create a mental picture or vision board where you want to be in six months, three years, five years.
  • Givers Gain: Are there any ways of where you can give to others in serving the community and making a positive contribution to society? It helps get you out of the rut of endless negative self-reflection.

Nutrition and cancer

The sad truth about conventional cancer treatment is that little attention is being given to how big an influence nutrition and acidity in the body has on the outbreak of the disease. Cancer cells feed in an acidic environment and yet very few doctors and hospitals are looking at the connection between diet and cancer.

At the beginning of the last century, the processed food industry was still in its infancy. The connection between mass consumption of processed foods and the diseases of modern times such as cancer can be seen when looking at the slide from the New England Journal of Medicine.  Processed foods include many substances such as unnatural flavors, preservatives sugars and salts that over the years form  a toxic cocktail in the body, creating a fertilizer for cancer cells.

It is no surprise that infectious diseases were the main cause of death around 1900. Death from heart disease peaked in the 1960s while today 185.9 of every 100,000 deaths is from cancer with rising tendency. Despite billions being poured into cancer research, little progress has been made in halting the trend. It is obvious that the “cancer industry” is going to do everything possible in trying to convince us that only conventional medicine heals. Any cancer patient will tell you how difficult it is to resist the onslaught of the highly profitable  cancer machinery.

Doctors are telling patients that their chances of survival are remote if they refuse chemo. Now try and argue with a doctor who will cite statistics (lots of them stemming from the pharmaceutical industry itself) while you are already in fear from fighting a life-threatening disease.

Doctors take the Hippocratic oath and seem to have forgotten the important quote above. I’m not saying conventional treatments should be avoided. This is a very personal choice and much also depends on how far the cancer has taken hold in the body. But to completely exclude nutrition as an important part of the curing process is irresponsible.

An important complimentary cancer therapy, is the strengthening of the body’s natural immune system.  this is also very important to Chemo patients since chemo destroys ALL cells…good and bad alike.  Did you know that cancer cells divide and multiply every 18 hours, whilst normal cells divide  24 hours for the same process.  Thus, if the cancer cells find an agreeable environment in which to grow, they spread faster than the healthy cells do.  This is one of the main reasons it is of utmost importance to not feed cancer cells!  Take away their energy supply and create an alkaline environment for healthy cells to do their job.  Otherwise, the cancer cells regain the upper hand….causing recurring cancer.

Cells need a plentiful supply of oxygen,  fresh produce, harvested from good soils that can provide the essential nutrients to keep the body’s 70 billion cells in a natural equilibrium and to promote the detoxification process. First, and foremost, you need a sugar-free diet so as not to FEED CANCER CELLS, to restore natural liver function and to detoxify.  White processed sugar essentially robs the body of essential nutrients. Other immune strengthening sweetening alternatives are maple syrup, natural honey, and dates…just to name a few.

The Gerson therapy: “Healing – the GersonWay”  puts particular emphasis on restoring proper functioning of the liver, which plays a crucial role in the detoxification of the body and restoring natural physiological activities. Cancer cells have no chance in a healthy body. A body with a strong immune system cultivates a healthy cell environment that prevents cells from mutating into cancer in the first place.
